Cooking from the Heart

I am at my creative best these days with a knife in my hand. I love to cook! I love the colors and the shapes, the smells and the endless possibilities.

All of my senses are engaged as I chop and dice, sauté and bake. Mixing, and kneading with my hands, feels like playing. It feels like home.

Cooking is an intimate art. I feel it in my heart. It calls on intuition and passion, and I always feel better after eating something I cooked myself.

Cooking is reliable when other creative endeavors are illusive. Lyrics can be moody. Characters in stories sometimes turn their backs. There are days when I struggle to focus, but every day, I find my spark again on the cutting board.

What is your relationship like with cooking?

Two kinds of vegan pizza!

It's always a pleasure reading of you, yes.. cooking is a matter of soul, and a real artistic expression.. You, as an artist, love expressing yourself in many ways, thank you for sharing it :) I love cooking too, and sharing it with people I love is fantastic! Wishing you all the very best and good luck for the show!

Thanks Ale! My first connection with you was through your cooking. I saw a beautiful picture of something you made, and was intrigued. You are creative in many ways too. A kindred spirit. Thanks for posting a comment. I appreciate it. Thanks too about the show. I am looking forward to it! Wish you were closer and could come. :)

Denise, you know I'm non too good at speaking creatively, but I'm gonna try to answer your question as best I can. When I cook, and when I help my family cook, the aromas that fill the air, and the process of doing the labor together just brings about love, happiness, and family togetherness. My family is very passionate about cooking and baking.

cooking changes for me, just like the taste. sometimes cooking is a painful reminder of my aloneness; but the act of preparing the food is nurturing and validating somehow, like 'i matter' and i am worth cooking for. . . . other times it is a joy filled, juices flowing, extravaganza of creativity. i mean some of the food groups i have thrown together in the same bowl would make a pig squeal. But i usually end up enjoying whatever experiment walks out of the kitchen. seriously? it's usually steamed veggies with some kinda gliggett on top and a glass of water

It just made me genuinely laugh that you used the word gliggett. That is so you! Brings back memories. I love experimenting with odd combinations. Sometimes it is great, and sometimes it is a lesson learned. :) You are right about it being nurturing, and you do matter. You deserve to eat well. I get the alone thing too. It feels good to have someone to share food with, and sometimes being alone stings. I get that. I think of you cooking spaghetti. That used to be your thing. Thanks for chiming in. I love hearing from you.

How did I miss this post?? Oh wow, those pizzas look super awesome.... I love cooking too, and became much more encouraged to cook for myself when I started eating vegan (partly because of wanting to know exactly what I was eating). I always think of that time many years ago when you cooked me a lovely fresh tomato sauce for our pasta dinner-- I had never made sauce that way before and it really opened my eyes. (The same evening there was also my idea that we roast and consume that head of garlic, which was eye-opening in a different way, heehee!) Anyway, I know exactly what you mean and you are so right, that cooking is a fully engaging, always satisfying form of creativity, when so many other forms can be ineffable and unpredictable. Thanks for the great post! :)

Alisa! Thank you for remembering that dinner. I do still buy jars sometimes, but I have found it so much better, and easy to make my own sauce. I always feel better after eating food I cook for myself. I would love to cook with you again. My biggest food memory of us is the time we made a Thanksgiving dinner together. It is the only time I ever had anything to do with cooking a turkey. You are so long vegan that it is funny to think that we did that together. Thanks for finding the post and for always being in my corner. I am in yours too. :)
